The National Western Stock Show (NWSS) – like all stock shows – is about the domination of animals in the United States.
It is a celebration of the animal agriculture industry, which kills billions of animals each year, destroys wildlife habitat and pollutes our water and air, and has adverse effects on human health.
Not content to tout this unsustainable system of food production, the NWSS also forces animals to entertain us in arenas. Make no mistake: rodeos are hard on animals; at the NWSS alone, several horses have died in past decade while "performing" for the supposed delight of the crowd.
What can I do?
Skip this cruel event! Instead of going to the stock show, volunteer a few hours with Rocky Mountain Animal Defense. Visit VegColorado and request a vegetarian starter guide.
Spend an hour or two perusing the web to find out more about the all-important decisions we make every day regarding what we eat. We recommend Farm Sanctuary, GoVeg, Peaceful Prairie and Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
You’ll be doing the animals and the earth – and yourself! – a favor.
Thank you.
